Stand-Up Script for Wednesday, February 8, 2012 If your community is participating in the RSVP program,
Yesterday we learned about how important sleep is for our overall health. To help you get the best sleep possible, it is important to understand three factors that affect our sleep and wake cycle:
First, circadian rhythms are our body's built-in clock that regulates our sleep and wake cycle. Circadian rhythms regulate serotonin and melatonin production in our body and light or darkness highly affect that production. We need serotonin during the day to wake us and keep us alert. We need melatonin at night to calm us and help us sleep.
Second, anabolism and catabolism is the scientific way of saying that our bodies are like rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries need to be fully exhausted before charging to get the best charge possible. Our bodies are the same, which means we need adequate activity during the day to wear down our “charge.” Wearing down our “charge” will lead to a deeper, more restorative, sleep.
Third, once we do fall asleep, our body goes through numerous sleep cycles. Each lasts approximately 90 minutes. Our sleep cycles have 4 stages that we move in and out of. Stages 1 and 2 are light stages of sleep that prepare our body for deep sleep. Stages 3 and 4 are deep sleep wherehealing, regeneration, and rehabilitation of the human body occurs and the immune system is refreshed. The REM or Rapid Eye Movement stage is where we dream, process emotions, retain memories, and relieve stress. If we are disrupted during our sleep cycle, our bodies do not move through all of these stages, and the quality of our sleep is negatively affected.
We will learn about sleep tomorrow. Today's Practice: # 18: Create a safe and secure environment for everyone. Be aware of all emergency procedures and report unsafe conditions immediately. [Facilitator: Please add a few thoughts of your own about today's practice or encourage discussion about the practice from the group.] Verse of the Day: The Psalms often speak of finding refuge in God such as “Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.” Psalm 57:1 (NIV) We as Pres Homes staff have the opportunity to be the answer to that kind of prayer breathed by our residents. Optional Closing Prayer: Loving God, You are our refuge and source of safety. Thank you for caring for us and the needs of our residents. Open our eyes to see people who are afraid and give us the courage to respond with patience and compassion.
We now lift up the joys and concerns that have been shared for prayer. (Name them or pause in silence.)
We pray in the name of Jesus, who shepherds us. Amen. (printer friendly version) (add daily news) (add weekly news) |
